PADEMOS

Problem

We hear about AI everyday, and as the topic is quite complex, our opinions tend to be rather shaped by media, than the existing research. At the same time, the researchers do not have a way to communicate their findings to the citizens and they do not know what the public is interested in. As such, information asymmetries are created which may lead to wrong perceptions of what AI actually is and the consequences of its use ("AI is taking over").

Solution

In several cycles of iterative development we have created a concept for the process of communication between citizens and scientists with the help of a specifically developed dashboard. The dashboard maps the knowledge of AI in the society and allows the scientists to directly answer  the questions of the citizens or communicate research findings. As a result, citizens feel heard and empowered to shape the research agenda setting, whereas the scientists can be inspired by topics that resonate with a larger citizen group.

The project was carried out at the European Institute for Participatory Media. Funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research.

User Feedback

"The knowledge map was very nice, clear, structured. Such a knowledge map I would like to have even in everyday life  for university material"

Citizen workshop participant

"I found the knowledge map really good, because it was something different than when information is simply written one after the other. It was very nicely designed and has, for me at least, aroused interest."

Citizen workshop participant

"I had no problems with the knowledge map and was able to find my way around easily. Everything was clear and well summarized to the essentials. It was especially interesting to see the contributions of other citizens."
