POWER

Problem

How to motivate citizens to prepare for extreme weather events or other sustainability challenges they rarely experience? Or more specifically, how to motivate people to engage in conversation and information gathering on collective water awareness platforms before the occurrence of a severe weather event?

My responsibilities

conceptualisation of the gamification model | development of gamification elements for various user types | close work with the developers | extensive usability testing with over 500 users | icon development | graphic design of the materials for the competition

Solution

To engage the users, we have developed a gamification model, which was adapted for each of the four collective awareness platforms in the UK and Spain and their respective water issues (e.g. flooding or water scarcity). We have designed gamification elements in a way that they would motivate a broad range of various user types. We have tested the developed gamification model with 500 users on Amazon Mechanical Turk. The results of this work are described in this paper. Additionally, in order to engage more users, we have developed a concept and conducted an idea competition that has driven the number of registrations and engagement on the platform considerably.

The project was carried out at the European Institute for Participatory Media in collaboration with a broad network of partners in Europe. Funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, GA 687809.
